When Should You Replace Your Boiler? 8 Signs It Is Time
If your boiler is over 10-15 years old, breaking down frequently, or costing more to run than it should, it is probably time for a replacement.
It is more than 10-15 years old
Boilers do not last forever. If yours is over 10 years old, it is likely running at 70-80% efficiency at best, compared to 90-95% for a modern A-rated boiler. That difference adds up to hundreds of pounds a year in wasted gas.
Repairs are becoming frequent
The odd repair is normal, but if you are calling out an engineer two or three times a year, the repair costs start to outweigh the cost of a new boiler. As a rule of thumb, if a single repair costs more than a third of a new boiler, replacement makes more financial sense. Check our boiler replacement cost guide for current prices.
Your energy bills keep rising
If your bills are going up but your usage has not changed, your boiler is losing efficiency. An old G-rated boiler runs at about 65% efficiency - that means 35p of every pound you spend on gas is wasted. A new boiler could cut your gas bills by 25-30%.
It takes a long time to heat up
If your house takes noticeably longer to warm up than it used to, the boiler is struggling to produce enough heat. This could be a system issue (needing a power flush) or a sign the boiler is on its way out.
You can smell gas or see a yellow flame
A healthy boiler flame should be blue. A yellow or orange flame means incomplete combustion, which can produce carbon monoxide. If you smell gas or see a yellow flame, turn the boiler off and call us immediately. This is a safety issue and the boiler may need replacing.
Parts are no longer available
Manufacturers stop making parts for older models. If your engineer cannot source a replacement part, your only option is a new boiler. This is common with boilers over 15 years old.
It is noisy
Banging, whistling, gurgling, and kettling noises all indicate internal problems. While some can be repaired, persistent noise in an older boiler is often a sign of multiple worn-out components.
You want to sell your home
A new boiler is a selling point. Buyers look for an efficient, recently installed boiler and a valid gas safety certificate. If you are planning to sell in the next year or two, a new boiler can add value and speed up the sale.
