Central heating system troubleshooting

Central Heating Not Working? A Troubleshooting Guide

Before calling an engineer, check the thermostat, timer, boiler pressure, and power supply. Many central heating problems have simple fixes you can do yourself.

Check the thermostat

It sounds obvious, but the thermostat is the first thing to check. Make sure it is set higher than the current room temperature. If it is a wireless thermostat, check the batteries. If it is a smart thermostat, check it is connected to Wi-Fi and the schedule has not changed.

Check the timer or programmer

If the heating only comes on at certain times, check the timer or programmer. Make sure the clock is correct (it can drift after a power cut), the heating schedule is set to the times you want, and the mode is set to ‘auto’ or ‘on’ rather than ‘off’.

Check the boiler

Look at the boiler display. Is it showing an error code? Is the pressure between 1 and 1.5 bar? Is the boiler switched on at the fuse box? If the pressure is low, repressurise it. If there is an error code, check the manual or search online for your specific boiler model and code.

Check individual radiators

If the boiler is running but specific radiators are cold, check that the thermostatic valves are not turned to zero or frost. Try bleeding the radiators to release trapped air. If radiators are cold at the bottom, the system likely needs a power flush.

When to call an engineer

If the boiler will not fire up, keeps locking out, makes unusual noises, or you can smell gas, call us. If the heating has been working but gradually getting worse over weeks or months, it is likely a system issue that needs professional diagnosis. Call us on 01932 943 009 - we will get it sorted.
