Magnetic Boiler Filters: What They Do and Why You Need One
A magnetic boiler filter catches iron oxide sludge before it damages your boiler. They cost £120-£180 fitted and can extend the life of your boiler by years.
What is a magnetic filter?
A magnetic filter (also called a system filter or magnetic system protector) is a small device fitted to the pipework near your boiler. It contains a powerful magnet that attracts and traps iron oxide particles - the black sludge that builds up in central heating systems over time.
Why does sludge form?
Water and metal do not mix well over time. The steel in radiators and the copper in pipes corrode slowly, creating iron oxide (magnetite). This sludge circulates through the system and settles in the boiler’s heat exchanger, pump, and valves. It causes cold radiators, kettling noises, and eventually component failure.
What does a filter prevent?
- Boiler breakdowns - sludge is the number one cause of heat exchanger failure
- Cold spots on radiators - the filter catches sludge before it settles
- Boiler noise - less debris means smoother water flow through the heat exchanger
- Efficiency loss - a clean system heats up faster and uses less gas
- Expensive repairs - a heat exchanger replacement costs £300-£500; a filter costs £120-£180
How much does it cost?
A magnetic filter fitted to an existing boiler costs £120-£180 including the filter and labour. When fitted as part of a new boiler installation, it is usually included or offered at a reduced rate. Most boiler manufacturers now recommend or require a magnetic filter for the warranty to be valid.
Does it need maintenance?
The filter should be cleaned during your annual boiler service. The engineer removes the magnet, wipes off the collected sludge, and refits it. It takes about 5 minutes and is included in the service.
Our recommendation
Every central heating system should have a magnetic filter, especially in hard water areas like Surrey where corrosion and scale are more aggressive. If you do not have one, we can fit one at your next service or as a standalone job. It is one of the cheapest ways to protect your boiler.
