Combi Boiler vs System Boiler: Which Is Right for Your Home?
A combi boiler heats water on demand and is ideal for smaller homes. A system boiler stores hot water in a cylinder and suits larger properties with multiple bathrooms.
How does a combi boiler work?
A combi (combination) boiler heats water directly from the mains when you turn on a tap or shower. There is no hot water cylinder or cold water tank, which saves space. It is the most popular type of boiler in the UK and works well for flats and houses with one bathroom.
How does a system boiler work?
A system boiler heats water and stores it in a separate hot water cylinder. This means you can run multiple taps and showers at the same time without losing pressure or temperature. It does take up more space because of the cylinder, but it is the better choice for bigger homes.
Which is better for my property?
For a 1-2 bedroom flat or house with one bathroom, a combi is usually the best option - cheaper to install, takes up less space, and gives you hot water on demand. For a 3+ bedroom house with two or more bathrooms, a system boiler with a cylinder will keep up with the demand better.
What about running costs?
Both types can be A-rated and run at 90-95% efficiency, so the running costs are similar. The main difference is in the installation cost - a combi swap is cheaper because there is less pipework involved. Switching from one type to the other costs more because of the extra work required.
