Boiler Grants and Schemes: What Free Help Is Available?

ECO4 Scheme

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme runs until March 2026 and may be extended. It requires large energy suppliers to fund energy efficiency improvements in eligible homes. You may qualify for a free or heavily subsidised boiler replacement if:

• You receive certain benefits (Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Child Tax Credit, etc.)
• Your property has a low energy efficiency rating (EPC band D, E, F, or G)
• Your current boiler is broken or inefficient

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers grants toward replacing a gas boiler with a low-carbon heating system:

• £7,500 toward an air source heat pump
• £7,500 toward a ground source heat pump

This is not a free boiler - it is a grant toward a heat pump installation. Your property must have an EPC (not older than 10 years) and must not be a new build. The scheme runs until March 2028. See our heat pumps vs gas boilers comparison for more on whether this is right for you.

Great British Insulation Scheme

This scheme covers insulation improvements (cavity wall, loft, underfloor) rather than boilers directly, but better insulation means your heating system works less hard. Some households can get insulation fitted for free. You may qualify if you are on certain benefits or your property is in Council Tax bands A-D.

Local authority grants

Some Surrey and Hampshire councils run their own energy efficiency programmes. These change regularly, so check your local council’s website or ask us - we stay up to date on what is available in the areas we cover.
